Wringinanom Cane Fire, East Java, Indonesia
On 12th August 1997, I was out on the north line at Wringinanom with Ducroo and Brauns 0-8-0T 7, some way from from the point of departure. As the train left I could see smoke rising from some of the nearer loris which quickly spread back down the train. The fire had been started by cinders from the locomotive igniting the copious amounts of cane trash which should have been removed during cutting. It soon came to a halt and the crew were able to divide the train and extinguish part of the fire. Once the loose trash had burned off from the rear section, the two halves of the train were rejoined and the whole ensemble headed back home.
There would have been some damage to the cane, but as l...

Loko Susu (milk locos) Semboro, East Java, Indonesia
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.9 месяцев назад
Semboro had two OK 0-6-0F (fireless) locomotives which were so called because they 'suckled' their steam from the mill's boilers. The high pressure was such that the steam condensed to hot water as charging occurred but some of it turned back to steam when the regulator was opened. As such, they had a limited range around the mill where, apart from shunting loris, they would marshal mud skips a...
Gempolkerep Empties, East Java, Indonesia
Просмотров 8829 месяцев назад
Empty loris at Gempolkerep were returned to the point of delivery by one of the smaller locomotives and such was the layout (a balloon loop) that each 'run' resulted in their facing in the opposite direction afterwards which guaranteed a smokebox first movement if you were lucky and / or patient as such trains ran roughly every two hours. In order of appearance, the locomotives are Vulcan 0-6-0...
Panji Finale, East Java, Indonesia
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Like De Maas on the other side of Situbondo, Panji finished with steam before I had a video camera. Again, like De Maas, but earlier, I persuaded the mill to fire up a loco in August 1991. It wasn't in the greatest condition and it was only when a member of the party took things into his own hands that we saw a little bit of action. For the record, the driver was the late Chris Walker. For a vi...
Gempolkerep Field Train, East Java, Indonesia
Просмотров 80510 месяцев назад
By 1994, steam at Gempolkerep was limited almost entirely to yard shunting and nearly all cane arrived by road. I did think that this was a field train but Ross Sadler has now corrected me. This was actually excess road cane which had been sent temporarily to storage sidings north of the mill and was now being collected by OK 0-8-0T 15. For other videos of steam locomotives here please visit: w...
Merican Vans, East Java, Indonesia
Просмотров 96610 месяцев назад
Like many sugar mills, Merican originally shipped out its production sugar in small box vans to the nearest main line station, in this case over a narrow river bridge. When that finished, the mill kept the vans to shuttle the sugar to its warehouse but used tractors for it. On 22nd August 1996, I had persuaded the mill to bring some of the vans to the main yard to recreate a scene which probabl...
Kanigoro 2 on mud trains, East Java, Indonesia
Просмотров 1 тыс.10 месяцев назад
Mud trains at every sugar mill in Java were the preserve of the smaller locomotives. At Kanigoro this traditionally meant Vulcan 0-6-0T 5 and Borsig 0-6-0T 1. For some years small OK 0-8-0T 2 was also a regular choice and this compilation shows it at work through the 1990s. For a video of the mill's operation please visit ruclips.net/video/c6DLZFMuKMk/видео.html For other videos of steam locomo...

Before the yard was rebuilt in the mid-1990s, the mill had used its three OK Luttermöller 0-10-0s for heavy duties which included working up from the weighbridge at the bottom of a slope leading under the main road to Ponorogo and the parallel main line branch. Especially with road deliveries, this sometimes require a degree of double heading, some examples appear in this video which show locom...
Kanigoro 6 on empties, East Java, Indonesia
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.11 месяцев назад
Despite being close to the southern boundary of Madiun, Kanigoro sugar mill kept some of its field lines open until the middle 1990s. On this occasion, OK 0-8-0T 6 is taking the morning empties out to the west. This necessitated crossing the long abandoned main line branch to Ponorogo as well as the parallel main road. Unfortunately, my camera battery ran out just as we reached the big bridge a...
Pakis Baru 5 Mud Train, Central Java, Indonesia

The only steam hauled trains which left the (sugar) mill area at Pakis Baru were the mud trains which were usually hauled by the smallest locomotives OK 0-4-2T 1 and 2. However, on 23rd August 1994, the mill management agreed to release OK 0-4-4-0T Mallet 5 for the duty. The regular driver was initially slighted but he very soon realised that this was 'fun' and our small group had total coopera...

Ketanggungan Barat was the site of a long abandoned former sugar mill but the estate around it was still cultivated and there was a locoshed here for the steam locomotives that worked the cane trains. Greetings Rob, years ago you very kindly sent me a load of slides of the Java sugar locos after I wrote to you having seen your item in the modeler book of narrow gauge. That was quite a while ago and unfortunately don't have the slides and the model is long gone when I left home. I have recently started another 009 model of a fictional Pabrik Gula. Your films have been very helpful toward making some thing that I hope will be a convincing model when it's done. ruclips.net/video/S0wN10c7sQA/видео.htmlsi=KppB_GRujhoSSMmX
